What’s Between Bites?

Between Bites is a newsletter about sharing food and everything that happens between the bites you take. It focuses on restaurants around the world (but mostly in the Istanbul, New York and London trifecta) that centre their menus on shareable plates.

Every month you’ll receive a jam-packed newsletter from me detailing a conversation I had with the people I shared a meal with. I love eavesdropping on conversations happening around me at restaurants: so I’m giving you permission to listen in on mine. You’ll also get to know someone from the restaurant I visited; perhaps the owner, the busboy, the host, or even an avid customer. Lastly, I’ll give you a rundown of the prices, dishes, atmosphere, accessibility and all the good stuff. 

Who is Yasmin?

I am a Turkish journalist and researcher that has an interest in food history, cultural politics and history. I graduated from New York University with a double major in Journalism and Global Liberal Studies (which is basically this social sciences soup that consists of sociology, philosophy, politics, history and religion) with a minor in peace and conflict studies. Throughout my studies, my main interest was always looking at said topics through the lens of food. Why? Because everybody eats. Culinary traditions are a part of every culture.

I worked, I freelanced and recently completed my Master’s from Columbia and LSE. I studied international history and my dissertation looked at British paternalism (shocking) and its effects on the local workers in Persia during the establishment of what is now known as BP.

I have a Turkish bulletin called 20’lik about living life, finding your path and analyzing world events as a 20-something.

In summary, I love talking about the avenues that food allows you to take, the secret doors it opens and the level of understanding it allows you to have once you sit across from a person and share a delicious meal.
